Webinar – Water, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services within Safe Operating Spaces

The webinar brought together researchers from the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB),the NorwegianInstitute for Water Research (NIVA) and UtrechtUniversity, presenting complementary perspectives on ecological modelling, stakeholder engagement and hydrological assessment.

The programme examined:

·      the importance of freshwater biodiversity within sustainable water management;

·      Species Distribution Models for assessing ecological responses;

·      linking hydrological models with biodiversity indicators;

·      modelling ecosystem services within river basin assessments;

·      integrating stakeholder values into ecosystem assessments; and

·      case study examples demonstrating biodiversity responses to changing water regimes, including applications from the Rhine basin.

The webinar illustrated how ecological indicators can be incorporated alongside traditional hydrological and socio-economic indicators, allowing water management decisions to better account for ecosystem health and biodiversity conservation.

Through practical examples from the project's case studies, participants gain a deeper understanding of how integrated ecological assessments strengthen adaptive river basin management and contribute to more resilient water governance.
